In Revelation, John speaks of the Harp (music) and the Bowl (intercession). This formula has been experienced throughout church history. For example, the Tabernacle of David and the Temple of Solomon both had prayer and praise being lifted up night and day without ceasing. These 4,000 musicians and 288 singers were released from from other duties to serve in the temple day and night. In other words, their job was to minister in the House of the Lord with song.
In 555 AD, St Comgal established a monastery in Bangor Ireland, It was there that he succeeded in planting the longest running 24-hour a day house of prayer and worship since the Tabernacle of David. It was in the Valley of Angels that three thousand men sang and prayed for over two hundred and fifty years 24 hours a day.
In the 12th century, Bernard of Clairvaux, France also believed in the strategy of a 24-hour a day worship and intercession along with the discipline of fasting. It was there in the Valley of Light that 700 monks changed the spiritual atmosphere of the region.
In the 1727 Count Zinzendorff and the Moravians in Herrnhut, Germany established a prayer meeting with hymns and intercession running 24 hours a day for more than 100 years. It was also their love for the lost that birthed the modern day missionary movement. This movement influence the life of John Wesley and George Whitfield.
In 1999 Mike Bickle and others established a prayer furnace in Kansas City, Mo. Today the International House of Prayer has over 400 missionary staff members serving in the House of Prayer 24/7.
It is in this spirit that the River House of Prayer follows in the footsteps of the past looking toward the future. Our desire is to create an enjoyable prayer environment where worship and intercession work together to transform the Connecticut River Valley one person at a time.
